CNE

Aims

The CNE works to serve Public Health, contributing to the control of diseases and risks in collaboration with the health authorities of the Autonomous Communities and the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality.


The aims of CNE are:
  • Improve the health of the population through Public Health Surveillance, the epidemiological study of diseases and risks, the quantification of their impact, and the monitoring of their evolution.
  • Research into the factors that compromise citizens' health.
  • Training of experts in epidemiology and public health.

To fulfill these functions, the CNE has been responsible for state-level epidemiological surveillance since 1988 (RD 10/1988 of January 8) and the National Epidemiological Surveillance Network since 1995 (RD 2210/1995). The CNE's functions are detailed in the Order of the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs of December 27, 2001.

Records and manages

  • Mandatory reporting of diseases through the National Epidemiological Surveillance Network (RENAVE) and contributes to international epidemiological surveillance.
  • Cohorts of different diseases (CoRIS Cohort), Determinants of Mammographic Density (DDM), IMPACT).

Watches

  • Notifiable and other infectious diseases.
  • Chronic diseases.
  • Health-related risk factors.
  • Epidemiological alerts and other public health emergencies.
  • Daily mortality (risk assessment plan for temperatures and other environmental factors).

Coordinates and advises

  • Epidemiological studies in the national and international context.
  • Technical advice upon request from various organizations.
  • Health situation analysis.
  • Mortality and morbidity analysis in Spain.

Investigates

  • Emerging problems, diseases with high prevalence in the population and vulnerable groups.
  • Morbidity, mortality, and individual and collective risk factors.
  • Participates in and leads international, European, and national research consortia.

Assesses

  • Effectiveness of health policies and programs.
  • Potential risks to the population's health.

Collaborates

  • With the General State Administration and the regional governments on public health and health information.
  • With national and international institutions on epidemiology and public health surveillance.

Teaches

  • To professionals and researchers in epidemiology, research methodology, and public health.

  • Interactive servers for monitoring daily mortality from all causes (MoMo and Kairós Panel).
